Under the sea - snorkeling in Punalu'u, Oahu, Hawaii

About a mile out to sea, where the surf is breaking, is a long reef .  It protects the beach side, creating ideal conditions for water play activities. On the beach side the water ranged from knee to chest deep, with lots of sandy bottom, coral, rocks, and sea life.  On the ocean side, the water depth was approximately 70 feet.  Every day we saw people fishing from the shore with long fishing rods anchored in the beach with a bell attached to announce when a fish strikes.  As well as folks using snorkel gear with spears for octopus and fish.
It was the first time I ever went snorkeling.  Swimming in the moving water, breathing with a snorkel, while trying to take pictures, is not an easy feat.  Talk about multi-tasking sheesh!
The vibrant colours and textures were amazing.
I'm delighted with the Canon PowerShot D20 waterproof camera. It performed flawlessly.

This is my favourite photo of all the ones I took under the sea.

These fish kept swimming away, they refused co-operate.
Coral is very sharp, I was careful not to touch it or step on it.

Shannon went further into the ocean than I did, she was closer to the reef. Below are her photos.

This sea turtle swam a complete circle around her.  It was the highlight of her snorkeling adventure.

I think her photos are amazing.

Dear readers, have you ever gone snorkeling?  If yes, where? when? did you take pictures?  Thanks tons for visiting my blog and allowing me to share my Hawaiian adventure with you.

Hawaii - Deep Sea Fishing

My camera went deep sea fishing with Doug, Shannon, Jason and AJ.  Unfortunately, taking motion sickness medication did not work for Shannon, she was sea sick most of the adventure.

This is the only fish they caught.
We are having fish tacos for dinner tonight.

Bait, Shrimp, Coconut water drink and shopping

This morning while we were walking along we found a dead octopus washed up on the beach.  Shannon immediately saw bait for fishing or to put in a lobster trap.  I found an old piece of rope, looped it around the head.  Shannon proudly carried it home.
It was really flexible and moist when we found it, but some critters must have been chewing on it.  Only one tentacle left.
Shannon put it in a bait box, tied a bouy to it and put out in the ocean in front of  our beach house.

This shrimp shack was featured on the food network.  It is less a one mile walk from the house.  I had the mild spiced garlic shrimp, Jason had the hot spiced garlic shrimp.
Shannon had a combo plate of coconut shrimp and crab cakes.
AJ had the garlic shrimp.  It was all super yummy, only now I'm sure we all have garlic breath.
Yesterday we went shopping we picked up coconut rum and young coconuts.  Today we chopped the tops off, added coconut rum and a straw.  These drinks were delicious.  After the drink was done we scooped the coconut meat out with a spoon it is really soft.
AJ doesn't like coconuts, rum or having his photo taken.  Fortunately for me he loves Shannon.
We also bought fresh fruit, veggies and fish at markets along the highway, as well as grocery/liquor store and stocked up the house.
The kids have been kayaking, swimming and playing on the beach.
Tomorrow Doug, Jason,Shannon and AJ are going deep sea fishing.  Karyann and I will most likely go shopping in Honolulu.  Looks like it will be a most excellent day.
